Mistral AI Raises €700M — Valuation Hits €7B
European AI leader Mistral closed a new funding round backed by major institutional investors, plans to double its research team and expand US operations.
Mistral AI, the Paris-based large language model company, announced a €700 million Series C funding round, valuing the company at €7 billion. The round was led by General Catalyst and General Atlantic, with participation from existing investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Founded in 2023 by former DeepMind and Meta AI researchers, Mistral has positioned itself as the leading European alternative to US-based closed model providers, emphasising open weights, efficiency, and data sovereignty — particularly important for European enterprise customers subject to GDPR and emerging EU AI Act requirements.
What the funding will be used for
- —Research team expansion: plan to double headcount from 250 to 500 by end of 2026
- —US office expansion: new San Francisco office to serve North American enterprise
- —Inference infrastructure: own compute capacity to reduce reliance on cloud providers
- —Le Chat consumer product: significant investment in the ChatGPT competitor
- —Mistral Enterprise: enhanced security and compliance features for regulated industries
Mistral exists to ensure that the AI era does not have a single point of cultural and technological control. Europe needs a champion in this space and we intend to be it. — Arthur Mensch, CEO Mistral AI
